last day to work on essay!!!

Today was our last day to work on our essay. We pretty much finished it last week, we just wanted to clean it around the edges a bit. I am feeling confident on our essay and I think it will get a good grade. It is informative, yet presented in an interesting mannor. The second part of class, I started studying for tomorrow's test. I am pretty nervous for it because there will be a lot of material on it, so I am glad that  I am studying it now.

3.26.15

Today in class we worked on our essays due Monday. Our group worked on our introductory paragraph. It was a bit of a struggle and took half an hour to right, but i think we hit it right on the head. We forgot about our conclusion paragraph, that will be a struggle to write by with the three of us in three different locations. Oh well, we will figure it out. in addition to our introductory paragraph, we got started on each of our individual topics. I think that this will be one of the best paper I have ever written (or participated in).

more presentations

Today we continued with two more presentations. We learned about the greek gods and the government of greece. The greek gods presentation was every interesting. Veronica and Adam did a brief overview of the greek gods. That was very fascinatin, as i have never stuied them before. Next was something on the Government of Athens, but I there wasn't alot of time for me to write things down. However, I did write some key words down.

  • Aristocracy: a form of governemt held by the richest people, in which power is in the hands of a small, priviliged class
  • Salon: a man who attempted to reform this form of government. His reforms were eventually removed by aristocrats, but he did manage to make little changes that are now huge aspects of today's life.
  • Tyranny: cruel and oppressive government. These people only cared about themselves, and not the other people of their country
  • Hipias: a rule harsh ruler that became oppressive in response to the death of his brother.
I hope we go over this government section again. I was very well presented but i did not get a chance to write all of the essential terms I wanted to write down.

more presentations 3.24.15tr

Today we continueed with presentations from four groups. The first group presented on Pericles and the golden age.  Pericles was a wealthy person who loved philosophy art and poetry. he was also a strategist for the pelopennsion war. The Golden age was the time of culure, art and literatue.  ( I am pitcturing a rennaisance type of thing.) The people had more time to focus on this because it was a time of peace between the persian and peloppenisian war. It was the time that the Parthenon was built.  It was built to replace a temple previously destroyed by the persians . The golden age was the time that the unrealistic statues became more life like. it was also a time of  Drama, theater, and philosophy. The second group presented on hoplites and the triremes. Hplites were rich soldiers who could afford to buy their own expensiv armour. Triremes were navy boats built very light for extra ability to maneuver. The third group did their powerpoint on philosophy.  Socrates studied beliefs and assumptions of people. He was put to death, for not believing in the gods that he was supposed to  believe in. He had the chance to escape, but he took so much pride in greece's democracy he agreed with his sentence. The second philospher was Aristotle. He focused on the systematic concept of logic. Plato was the third philospher. He studied music and poetry at a very young age. He joined the military, traveled to italy and egypt to study, and founded the first university in Europe. The fourth and final froup presented on art and architecture. They taight us abut the three basic shapes of architecture. Doric order was a very simplistic style of column. Ionic order had very tall columns. Corinthian order was the most decrative of the three. It's columns had glowers and leaves bunhed up at the top of the column.

3.20

Today, Caitlyn, Trish and I presented our project. I was pleased with the outcome, except for the part that my section was short. I was trying to go under 2 minuites, so the power point was roughly 5 minutes overall, but instead my section was about 5 minutes and the other sections were 15 minutes each. Another group presented  and I thought they did pretty well too.

3.19

I missed the first part of West Civ today, but I still got plenty out of it. Mr. Schick said something that really stuck in my mind. "The people of ancient egypt would never even think of rising up against unfair pharoah, but the people of Greece Did do something to help themselves when it came to an unworthy ruler." This is where democracy sprouted, where the common people began to have a chance to make things right for themselves. Ancient Greece's practices may be old, but they certainly aren't out of date.

3.18.15

Today we had a really funny class. It involved Mr. Schick giving a hilarious impression of the average girl in high school, an incident involving water splashed all over, and dramatification of the name Hipias. It was a good lesson too. I didn't know that the ancient greeks liked to party at their conferences. That is certainly something that americans did not pick up. I think politicical meetings must be pretty boring. I tip my hat off to anyone who even gets involved in politics.

3.17.15

Today in class we worked on our google slides. Today was my first day working on it, but I definitely made a decent sized dent in the work. I found the pelopennesian ( don't think I spelled tht right) war  very fascinating. I thought that it was cool how the athenians saw sparta as a threat, so they put up a wall around it' empire to protect itself, but sparta saw  Athens as a much more powerful force. The project got a little boring working on it by myself, but i found it really fun during class with everyone talking on the topic of ancient greece.

Socrates cyber day V

Socrates was a brilliant man, who strongly believed in the power of Democracy. Socrates was born 470 BC. His life was documented by his pupils. He was the son of a sculptor and a midwife. He was not from a particularly rich family, so he knew basic Greek and learned his father's trade at a very young age.  Socrates had 3 sons, but he wasn't very interested with them at all. He was much more interested with the intellectual development of the boys of Athens as a whole. Although socrates did not provide much for is family as a philospher, he did serve in the military.  Sicrates was charged of two things, corrupting youth and not worshipping the gods the city acknowledges. In court, Socrates gave a poor defense and was sentenced to death. A few of his buddies offered to help him escape because a good portion of Athens was on Socrates side. Socrates refused the offer because he believed that if the court wanted him dead, he should die to pay for his actions, thus prooving his strong belief in the power of democracy. One of Socrates' most famous quotes was "the unexamined life is not worth living". What Socrates meant was that one should stop and reflect on their past, so they they can make more accurate judgments for the future.

Cyber Day IV

This temple Selinus of the Sicilian colony is an example of a stoa, which was a common stucture of the seventh century BC and later. The angles it created was useful for the Agora and an outdoor market place. The Selenius was a very unique stoa. It was created after the seventh century and had a tapezoid shape. However, what was truly fascinating about Selinus is that all the nearby shops have the same face (front) even thoug each shop was for a different use. Clearly, there must have been one person in charge of this area making sure tht everything looked like it "fit together".

The Delphic theater was built in the fourth century B.C. Interestingly enough, the Theater of Delphi is one of the few theatres in Greece in which we know it's exact date and design. This theater is where music contests of the Pythian games took place. It is very similar to modern day theaters, with the stage is the prominent part of the theater. Greeks generally built theaters to have outstanding acustics.

The Acropolis is not a single building, but a series of buildings on a hill overlooking athems. Athens is where democrocy was born. The buiding shown above is the pantheon, one of the buildings of the Acropolis. It is a temple built for Athena Pathenos. It was decorated with sculptures (many were removed and are now siting in a museum). Religious ceremonies did ot take place inside the building, but outside because it was like Athena Pathenos' home.
